Discover 1,000 years of history in Suffolk’s cathedral town of Bury St Edmunds

Suffolk’s cathedral town of Bury St Edmunds has a walkable, compact town centre making it easy to discover 1,000 years of history in just 48 hours.

Stand amongst the ruins of the 11th century Abbey of St Edmund set in the stunning Abbey Gardens. Founded in 1020, the Abbey was one of the most important monasteries in medieval Europe but the whereabouts of St Edmund’s remains are a mystery to this day.

Admire the magnificent St Edmundsbury Cathedral, find out about the Abbey’s role in the Magna Carta story, visit St Mary’s Church, the final resting place of Henry VIII’s sister Mary Tudor, Queen of France, take guided tours of the Greene King Brewery and Theatre Royal, Britain’s last remaining Regency playhouse and discover the town’s literary links to Charles Dickens plus its US connections.

Eat and drink at award-winning restaurants, gastropubs and cafés. Shop ’til you drop at independent boutiques, markets and leading high street stores. Bury St Edmunds is also a great base from which to explore Suffolk’s medieval wool towns and Newmarket, home of British horse racing.
